Testament is a thrash metal band from Berkeley, California, formed in 1983 as Legacy by guitarist Eric Peterson and his cousin Derrick Ramirez. Singer Chuck Billy joined in 1986, and the band has released fourteen studio albums, from The Legacy in 1987 to Para Bellum in 2025. Its first three records are the place to start.
The Short Version
- Formed in 1983 as Legacy; renamed Testament before The Legacy (1987).
- Start with The New Order (1988).
- Newest album: Para Bellum (2025).
- As of October 2026: no Texas dates; Monterrey, Mexico, on November 18.
Who Are Testament?
Peterson and Ramirez lived in the Alameda area and spent their time in local parks drinking beer and playing metal records, Peterson told Metal Hammer’s Malcolm Dome in 2011. Legacy came together with bassist Greg Christian, drummer Louie Clemente and singer Steve “Zetro” Souza.
The first gig was a $5 punk show at a place called The Record Gallery, opening for Rebels & Infidels. Peterson described the sound as “a Priest style, but with a punk attitude.” Soon after, Legacy opened at the Stone in San Francisco for Slayer and Lȧȧz Rockit with only four songs of its own.
When Ramirez quit to start his own band, Legacy replaced him with Alex Skolnick, a teenager who had studied guitar with Joe Satriani. Peterson remembered him as “just 15 at the time.” A four-song demo followed, with “Burnt Offerings,” the first song Peterson and Skolnick wrote together. Our Bay Area thrash guide covers the clubs and bands around them.
Why Did Legacy Become Testament?
In 1986 Souza left to replace Paul Baloff in Exodus, the story told in our Bonded by Blood feature. Before he went, he pushed Chuck Billy, the older singer of a local band called Guilt, to call Skolnick and try out. Billy sang the demo’s four songs in the hallway, because the rehearsal room was too small.
The band went to see Guilt before deciding. “Guilt sounded like Ratt and were all pretty boys,” Peterson told Dome. “Then you had this huge figure in the middle of the stage wearing a trench coat and calling everyone a pussy!” Billy got the job.

Megaforce boss Jon Zazula flew in to watch a rehearsal on September 27, 1986, the day Metallica’s Cliff Burton died in Sweden. He signed the band, but other groups already used the name Legacy. S.O.D. singer Billy Milano suggested Testament. “Everything made sense,” Peterson said, so the debut was titled The Legacy to keep faith with the past. Legacy played its last show under that name at the Stone on March 4, 1987.

Testament Band Albums: Where to Start
The Legacy came out on April 21, 1987, through Megaforce and Atlantic. The band recorded it that January in Ithaca, New York, with producer Alex Perialas. Testament opened for Anthrax on the Among the Living tour, and the album sold over 150,000 American copies in three years. Metal Hammer’s Malcolm Dome wrote that it “had many believing that here were the next big thrash metal band,” the one to turn the Big Four into a Big Five. “But it never happened.” Our Big Four explainer weighs that case.

Start with The New Order, released May 10, 1988. It is tighter than the debut and holds “Into the Pit,” the band’s most-played song live, plus “Trial by Fire” and “Disciples of the Watch.” It reached No. 136 on the Billboard 200.
Practice What You Preach followed on August 8, 1989, trading the occult themes for politics and greed. It reached No. 77, Testament’s first Top 100 album, and sold over 450,000 American copies by 1992 without ever being certified gold. Then go back to The Legacy for the rawest version of the band.

Souls of Black (1990) put Testament in European arenas on the Clash of the Titans tour with Slayer, Megadeth and Suicidal Tendencies. The Ritual (1992) peaked at No. 55, and its ballad “Return to Serenity” is the band’s only charting American single.

What Happened to Testament in the 1990s?
Skolnick played his last show on Halloween 1992, and Clemente left soon after. “I think Alex just wanted to get away from playing metal,” Billy told Dome. “We never fell out with him.” Grunge was squeezing thrash off MTV and radio, and Billy said the band “had a battle to get any sort of exposure.”
The records got heavier as the lineup kept changing. Low (1994) brought in guitarist James Murphy and drummer John Tempesta, and its “Trail of Tears” honors Billy’s Pomo heritage. Demonic (1997) had Gene Hoglan on drums, the first of his two stints. The Gathering (1999) paired original Slayer drummer Dave Lombardo with fretless bassist Steve Di Giorgio, and it is the 1990s Testament record to hear.
Chuck Billy, Cancer and Thrash of the Titans
In 2001 Billy was diagnosed with germ cell seminoma, a rare cancer that in his case formed in his chest near the heart. “When I went home and told my wife, the enormity hit me and I spent the rest of the day crying,” he told Dome. He went through chemotherapy and turned to his Native American heritage and a healer for support.
On August 11, 2001, friends staged the Thrash of the Titans benefit at the Maritime Hall in San Francisco for Billy and Death’s Chuck Schuldiner, who was also fighting cancer. All 2,300 tickets sold out. Ten bands played, among them Heathen, Death Angel, Vio-lence, Sadus, Forbidden Evil, Anthrax, S.O.D. and Exodus with Baloff.
Legacy closed the night just after 2 a.m. with Souza singing, Skolnick on lead guitar and John Tempesta on drums. Billy himself came up for the last song, “Into the Pit.” Schuldiner died that December.

“So, the good thing about my illness is it brought all these bands back together.”
That was Billy’s verdict to Metal Hammer, and it held for his own band. The classic lineup toured Europe in May 2005, and Skolnick and Christian stayed. The Formation of Damnation (Nuclear Blast, 2008) was the first all-new Testament album in nine years. Dark Roots of Earth debuted at No. 12 in 2012, the band’s highest chart position.
Gene Hoglan, back on drums since 2011, played on that record and the next two. On Dark Roots, hear “Native Blood,” Billy’s song about his Native American heritage. From Brotherhood of the Snake (2016), start with the title track.

Billy tells the whole story in a memoir, Holding My Breath: The Two Testaments of Chuck Billy, co-written with Dave Erickson. Permuted Press publishes it on November 10, 2026, with a foreword by Rob Halford.
Testament Band Members Today
Testament is Chuck Billy on vocals, Eric Peterson and Alex Skolnick on guitars, Steve Di Giorgio on bass and Chris Dovas on drums. Peterson is the only original member. He and Billy are the only two who play on all fourteen studio albums.
Christian left for good in January 2014, and Di Giorgio returned in his place. Hoglan left in January 2022, and Dave Lombardo returned that March but sat out the 2023 dates. Dovas, a Berklee College of Music graduate, filled in during 2022 and took the job in 2023.
Past members include guitarists Glen Alvelais and James Murphy and drummers Paul Bostaph and John Tempesta.

Para Bellum and Testament Now
Para Bellum came out on October 10, 2025, through Nuclear Blast. It is Dovas’s first Testament album and the first mixed by Jens Bogren instead of longtime collaborator Andy Sneap. Loudwire named it the best metal album of 2025.
The record pulls in blast beats and black metal riffs, a taste Peterson also feeds in his side project Dragonlord. “Chris did make Eric put a little more ‘umph’ and really shift gears and come up with different rhythm patterns,” Billy told Blabbermouth.

Hear “For the Love of Pain,” then the seven-and-a-half-minute ballad “Meant to Be.” Billy told the Appetite for Distortion podcast in August 2026 that the band has “close to nine tracks” for the next album and hopes to record in summer 2027.

Testament in Texas
North Texas thrash bands opened for Testament when it came through. Gammacide, the Arlington band active from 1986 to 1992, “opened for several national acts, such as Exodus, Morbid Angel and Testament, when they came through Dallas,” the Dallas Observer reported in 2025. Our Gammacide history has the rest.
Gammacide guitarist Scott Shelby links that story to this site. He played the leads on Rotting Corpse’s 1990 demo, Neck Breaking Fury, without attending a single practice, and took the band’s lead guitar chair in 2024, as the timeline records. Megaforce, the label that signed Legacy, also came sniffing around Rotting Corpse around 1987. Nothing was signed, as the history page explains.
